Press release -

One year on since Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ record-breaking transit of the Corinth Canal with small ship Braemar

Today marks one year since Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Braemar made history by becoming the largest ship ever to traverse Greece’s historic Corinth Canal.

On 9th October 2019, under the command of Captain Jozo Glavic, 195.82-metre-long and 22.52-metre-wide Braemar broke a world record to become the largest ship ever to traverse this famous feat of engineering, with the canal only 24 metres at its narrowest point.

The sell-out sailing broke a second record when it became Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ highest rated cruise for itinerary satisfaction from guests on board.

Clare Ward, Director for Product and Customer Service at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said:

“While Braemar became the largest ship to ever travel through the Corinth Canal, ironically it was her smaller size – in cruise ship terms – that made this possible.

“It really was an incredible sailing, with the rock faces so close our guests could almost reach out and touch them. We received such wonderful feedback from our guests afterwards, describing it as ‘exceptional’ and ‘truly remarkable’.

“We are so proud of the experiences our smaller ships allow us to offer our guests, and this record-breaking sailing really does help us to illustrate that.

“We can’t wait to replicate this experience for even more guests when Braemar returns to the Corinth Canal, with a number of future sailings already confirmed.”

Details of some of Fred. Olsen’s future Corinth Canal sailings are as follows:

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

At Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines we are very proud of our smaller ships – Bolette, Borealis and Balmoral - and the imaginative and unusual itineraries they allow us to offer. Every cruise is hand-crafted from scratch by our team of in-house Journey Planners to make sure you are not only visiting the best destinations, but at the best time to experience them.

For us, it’s not just about where we go but how we take you there. We put as much time into planning scenic cruising as we do in choosing the destinations themselves. On board, our Signature Experiences showcase the history, culture, nature and flavours of the destinations you’ll visit – from Treats of the Region, where you can enjoy local delicacies, to our Sky at Sea star-gazing sessions where you can relax with a hot toddy out on deck while our astronomer talks you through the night sky.

Plus, with each ship carrying 1,300 guests or less, our ships are small enough for us to offer a warm, friendly and personal service where nothing is ever too much trouble, as we visit a host of exciting ports in every corner of the globe.
