Press release -
Access to Portsmouth improved for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines' guests
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ ship Boudicca will commence her second season of cruises from Portsmouth on 1st November 2011. To complement Portsmouth International Port’s newly-opened ferry and cruise terminal, which will greatly enhance the embarkation experience, Fred. Olsen cruise guests will be able to benefit from even better links to this historic maritime city with the opening of the new Hindhead Tunnel on the A3, the main route to Portsmouth for those travelling by road. The new A3 is on schedule to open at the end of July 2011.
Matt Grimes, Director, Planning, Port and Logistics for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines said:
“We are very pleased to be offering another season of cruises from Portsmouth aboard Boudicca, following a successful initial season in 2009.”
“The new Hindhead Tunnel is excellent news for our guests, as the completion of this ambitious engineering project will ease congestion and reduce travel time on the A3 to Portsmouth. By the time we start our cruise season in November this year, travel to and from the Port, as well as the whole embarkation experience, will be greatly improved.”
Cllr Mike Hancock, Cabinet Member for Planning, Regeneration and Economic Development for Portsmouth City Council, said:
“I have long campaigned for a tunnel at Hindhead, as it has been a major bottleneck on the road to the South Coast for too long. People and goods will now be able to get more quickly to and from Portsmouth; a major boost to our businesses, economy and tourism.”
Cruises from Portsmouth commence on 1st November 2011, with a 25-night cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean, D1124, on board 880-guest Boudicca. This cruise visits many fascinating and historic ports, including Limassol in Cyprus, Alexandria in Egypt, and Algiers in Algeria. It additionally offers a theme of ‘Watercolour Painting’, through the Vistas cruise enhancement programme. There is also live entertainment on board, in the form of music from the Phoenix Jazz Band, and comedy with Dave Kristian, through the ‘Music & Laughter’ programme. Prices for this cruise start from £2,425 per person, based on two adults sharing an outside twin cabin, grade ‘E’. The price includes accommodation, all meals and entertainment on board, and port taxes.
Subsequent cruises from Portsmouth visit the Canary Islands, including a Christmas cruise, as well as a ‘Christmas Markets’ cruise to Northern Europe and a mini-cruise to Antwerp, the attractive Belgian town at the heart of the diamond industry.
