Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Becomes First Silver Carbon Literate Organisation in the Cruise Sector

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has become the first in the cruise sector to achieve Silver Carbon Literate status, underscoring its commitment to tackling climate change and supporting a more sustainable future for cruising.

Awarded by The Carbon Literacy Project, this recognition reflects Fred. Olsen’s dedication to helping its people understand the carbon impact of everyday choices – and to empowering them to reduce emissions at an individual, community and organisational level. Through this, the company is driving practical, everyday change that contributes towards a net-zero future.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines achieved Bronze‑level Carbon Literate accreditation in November 2025. Since then, the company has delivered Carbon Literacy training to 88 employees across 17 departments, with the programme now reaching 40% of its workforce. Building on this progress, Carbon Literacy training has been embedded into the onboarding process, helping new colleagues develop a clear understanding of carbon impacts from day one and encouraging a shared sense of environmental stewardship.

The training programme has strengthened climate and carbon awareness across the business, with 96% of participants reporting improved understanding and increased confidence to make carbon-conscious choices in their work and daily lives.

Samantha Stimpson, CEO at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said:

“Achieving Silver Carbon Literate status reflects the commitment of our colleagues to better understand their impact and to make more thoughtful, sustainable choices every day. When individuals come together with a shared purpose, those everyday actions can drive real, lasting change.

“At Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, we are focused on nurturing this mindset across our business – empowering our people, working closely with our partners, and continuing to take practical steps that support a more sustainable future for cruising.”

Following the training, greater understanding of carbon impacts has translated into practical action across the cruise line’s ships and shore‑side teams, with carbon‑reduction initiatives ranging from the digitalisation of selected shipboard services to waste and water reviews.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has also committed to a programme of community engagement initiatives throughout 2026, aimed at creating meaningful social and environmental impact in the communities in which it operates.

Activities to date include the installation of a publicly accessible defibrillator on Liverpool’s waterfront, alongside coordinated CPR training for local partners to support its use. The company has also delivered environmental conservation volunteering initiatives involving both shipboard and shoreside teams. Further initiatives are planned across 2026, bringing together partners, colleagues and guests.
